About Poneke
Kia ora
This is essentially a Wellingtonian’s blog. Poneke is the Maori transliteration of Port Nicholson, which was the original name the British settlers gave to Wellington. The actual Maori name for the area that today is New Zealand’s capital is Te Whanganui-a-Tara, or the Great Harbour of Tara, a reference to a chief named Tara, said to have visited the area 800 years ago.
