Preview: Skeptics presentation on the media and “alternative medicine” will be posted on Sunday
In my article on the MeNZB vaccination programme this week, I mentioned a presentation I made to the Skeptics Society conference four years ago based on research I undertook on the way the media treated medical issues. I analysed 13 New Zealand newspapers over a period, looking at whether science-based medicine was treated the same way as “alternative medicine,” and found it was not.
My findings were that the media were sceptical of, even hostile to, scientific medicine, but not to “alternative medicine,” which was rarely challenged, even when people died because of it, as happened with Liam Williams Holloway.
A commenter, pkiwi, asked if I could post the presentation on this blog.
As I responded to pkiwi, I am happy to do that. However, it is 2500 words, longer than even the 1500-word articles I frequently post, probably too long to digest on a weekday. So I will post it on Sunday.
