NZ Post admits mistake over undelivered parcel

New Zealand Post has admitted it made a mistake when a postie left a card in my suburban Wellington letterbox saying I had to go to the local mail delivery centre to collect a parcel.

As I blogged on Monday, I attended the delivery centre at the ungodly hour of 7am to get what I expected was something too big for my letterbox. Instead, I was given a smallish, 800g parcel containing a book I’d bought through Trade Me the week before. It was identical in size to three other books of the same series that had been delivered to my letterbox without a problem in previous weeks.

Vaguely recalling NZ Post had increased parcel rates recently and thinking they might also have stopped home-delivering parcels, I emailed the organisation asking what was going on. When no response forthcame, I blogged about it.

Well, the blog was noticed. About 8.30am today my cellphone rang. It was Murray Burnett, the delivery leader from my local postal centre. “We made a mistake,” he said. “We should have delivered the parcel and we will deliver them to you in the future.”

It was nothing to do with its weight, he assured me. Posties will carry parcels up to 3kg for home delivery, and on their walking rounds (which they are round my way because of the hills) they carry up to 16kg at a time in their bags. Whew! No wonder they all look so fit.

  • As yours is an anonymous blog, isn’t it a little creepy that he knew your number, and out of all the thousands of parcels not delivered properly that week, he knew your case?
Or maybe I’m right: Telecom and NZ Post are still joined at the hip, only one has more marketing glitz. The other is still fondly thought of by the community. Until one of those cards arrives, sending the elderly on unnecessary trips to town.

[Poneke says: There is no conspiracy. As I made very clear in the original blog post, I complained to NZ Post about the non-delivery. When they did not respond, I told them I would write about it on my blog. After the blog story appeared, NZ Post contacted me, and referred to the blog story.]

  • Result, you rock. Our postie has a cool little retro Honda 50, I like posties and NZ Post have been fine to us.
